DOLLAR IMPERIALISM
The cash rich IPL (Indian Premier League) has come to the limelight even before a single ball had been bowled. The money that has come into the game will make the players lick their fingers . They would be getting enough money to build a house of their own and also a car each of the seven continents . Lalit Modi , the architect behind the IPL has been praised from all quarters of the cricketing fraternity with few exceptions.
It has to be remembered that the plan of the IPL has been brought about by the BCCI as a counter league against the rebel ICL (Indian Cricket League). It was BCCI’s overpowering of the ICC (International Cricketing Council) that led to the disapproval of ICL. It was proving to be a threat to the BCCI. The ICL was not be bogged down by BCCI so they went long with their proposed plan of ICL.
The IPL has brought the big bucks of India together ,like Vijay Mallaya ,Ambani,Ness Wadia, Preity Zinta, Shahrukh khan just to count a few. All these persons have been successful in their respective fields .They have taken the dig in the same pool without knowing much of the game . Do these bigwigs know what reverse swing, seam position, Google, chainman, a perfect wrist position mean? But they are just in the game because they were lured by the money floating in the IPL. One cannot help it as greediness and selfishness have been one of the most common “negative” values in a human being.
The day the players were been auctioned in the Taj hotel, it was a horrendous sight for any ardent cricket fan. THE GENTLEMAN’S GAME HAD BEEN TURNED INTO BUSINESS PROPAGANDA. It was surprising to see such an episode of players being auctioned taking place in India where cricket is considered to be a religion . If this is the case would anyone auction the statues of our temples?
The players being auctioned was a painful sight. The bigwigs , owner of their respective teams were seen bidding for players. The bidding was a surprise where big players like Shane Warne, Ricky Ponting, Shivnaraine Chanderpaul, Glenn McGrath getting low prices, on the other hand players like Ishant Sharma, Rohit Sharma, David Hussey were getting much more then what they deserved. If Gandhi ji would have been present in the auction he would have been happy on one front as it seemed that the owners adopted Swadeshi by adopting Indian players. This showed lack of professionalism in their part.
The IPL teams must be represented by foreign players, catchment area players and under 21 players. If these young guns are thrown in the twenty 20 format in their initial stages they might not succeed in the original form of test cricket.
If Kerry Packer revolutionized the game of cricket or rather the ODI’S then it would be interesting for us to see as to what kind of impact is the IPL going to have in the international scenario.
